ALMA Office Building at Santiago, Chile

Conceptual Building Proposal:

The proposed building reflects the original Cepal Square building dimensionally, including a sunken patio as well, which acts as the foundation for this tectonic design.

The principal façade includes a huge void, an urban gesture that serves as a gateway or portal to the Rio Mapocho, as well as San Cristobal Mountain beyond. We propose that this important void, figuratively the emptiness of space, will include two- and three-dimensional holographic projections of the universe.

The west façade is treated as a giant louver, separated into 64 individual round mechanical systems, a gesture to the total number of telescopes of the ALMA Project.

The east façade was treated as a green vertical garden, with natural flowering vegetation, giving a softer, more residential edge to the neighboring residential neighborhood.

The north façade opens to the existing park through a terrace and cafeteria, looking to the Andes Cordillera and bringing each day the sun into the building.
